The hotel chain aims to achieve a balance in the functioning of the ecosystems where the hotels, residences and golf courses are located and thus make healthier, integrated and smarter spaces available to its customers

Grupo Piñero, a Spanish tourism company with more than 40 years of history, advances in the sustainable management of the landscape in its properties in the Caribbean. A commitment that positions it as one of the few tourism companies in the world that integrates local ecosystems in its environment of use. To do this, action is taken on the ordering, planning and management of green areas, where native flora is promoted as a way of attracting biodiversity and improving the conditions of the ecosystems present there. In this way, the company continues to promote a sustainable management model that contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals established in the United Nations 2030 Agenda.  

Within the framework of the Comprehensive Coastal Management Plan and through the “Landscape” Program, Grupo Piñero has launched various actions that promote the comprehensive management of the formative aspects of the landscape. Among the different actions carried out, the creation of native plant nurseries in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Jamaica stands out. Specifically, in Playa La Romana (Dominican Republic) the company collaborates with the National Botanical Garden of the Dominican Republic in the development of a nursery of more than 3,000m2 that has more than 15,000 individuals produced, in addition, 90% of these species they are of high interest and ecological value for the country. In Mexico, it has had an Environmental Management Unit (UMA) for years, where up to 5 species protected by Mexican law are produced (Xiat, Kuka, Chit,

Since 2019, the company has planted more than 2,000 trees of protected species on the properties it owns in the region. In this way, Grupo Piñero offsets its carbon footprint by more than 300 tons of CO2 per year.

In the words of Isabel Piñero, CSO (Chief Sustainability Officer) of the company, “through the Comprehensive Coastal Management Plan, we plan and manage the environment where we operate in a sustainable manner, improving biodiversity and efficiently managing its resources. For this reason, throughout 2022 we will continue promoting this project that will allow us to face environmental challenges and be a benchmark in sustainable management in the regions where we are present. In this sense, Grupo Piñero foresees an investment of 10 million euros to continue carrying out actions in the four programs of the Comprehensive Coastal Management Plan: Water, Biodiversity, Landscape and Beaches.”

Therefore, throughout 2022, Grupo Piñero will continue to carry out actions that promote the sustainable management of the landscape as part of the ‘Landscape’ Program. In this way, the company will expand the native plant nursery in Bávaro and improve the one in Mexico, in addition it will create several composting areas to integrate organic waste into the operating processes of hotels, residences and golf courses. Likewise, a study on resilience to Climate Change will be carried out to analyze the environment’s ability to adapt to this phenomenon.

In addition, through the “We are Ecoists” movement, it will continue to invite all of society to bring out its most ‘ecoist’ side and carry out actions that contribute to the preservation of the environment. With this movement, the company not only announces its sustainability strategy, but also calls on all individuals to take care of the planet together.
