MAJOR CHAMPION AND FORMER WORLD NO. 1 RETURNS TO COMPETE IN MEXICO FOR FIRST TIME IN 10 YEARS

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO (October 10, 2019) — Jason Day, a 12-time PGA TOUR winner and former World No. 1, has officially committed to participate in the Mayakoba Golf Classic, scheduled for November 11-17 at El Camaleon Golf Club at the Mayakoba Resort. This will mark the first time that Day will compete in Mexico since the 2009 Mayakoba Golf Classic, where he tied for 28th place.

“I am really excited to add Mayakoba to my schedule,” Day said in making the announcement. “I recall my visit from 10 years ago and how incredible the venue is. I look forward to seeing how Mayakoba has grown and evolved. You hear such amazing things about the property and the tournament’s warm hospitality from other players out on TOUR so I’m sure my family and I will have a wonderful week.”

Day occupied the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings for a combined total of 51 weeks over a period from September 2015 to February 2017. His 51 weeks atop the ranking is the eighth most in the history of the world ranking. He is currently ranked No. 25. Since 2010, the 31-year-old Day has finished among the top-10 on 15 different occasions in golf’s four Major Championships, highlighted by a dominant victory in the 2015 PGA Championship played at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

The 2016 PLAYERS Championship also stands out among Day’s 12 career PGA TOUR victories. Additionally, he has claimed the title twice at the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play as well as multiple other victories including the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Farmers Insurance Open, Wells Fargo Championship, The Barclays, the BMW Championship and several others.

“It is always special when we welcome players of a caliber and profile like Jason,” Tournament Director Joe Mazzeo said. “There are few in the game of golf who have risen to the level that Jason has. For the last decade, he has been one of the elite players in the world and it will be a real treat for all our fans to watch him compete here in Mexico at Mayakoba.”

With the addition of Day, there are currently three players among the top 25 in the world scheduled to compete at Mayakoba—defending champion Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler are the other two. Day is the fourth Major Champion to commit, joining Graeme McDowell (2010 U.S. Open), Zach Johnson (2007 Masters, 2015 Open Championship) and Jason Dufner (2013 PGA Championship).

Past Mayakoba champions in the field are Brian Gay (2008), John Huh (2012), Harris English (2013), Charley Hoffman (2014), McDowell (2015), Pat Perez (2016), Patton Kizzire (2017) and Kuchar (2018).

In addition, 12 players from Latin America are currently slated to participate in the 13th edition of Mexico’s pioneering PGA TOUR event. Three of those are Mexican players who are members of the PGA TOUR (Abraham Ancer, Carlos Ortiz and Kristoffer Ventura), while two others have already claimed titles on the PGA TOUR in the 2019-2020 season (Chile’s Joaquin Niemann and Colombia’s Sebastian Muñoz). Three more Mexican professionals will receive sponsor’s invitations including one to the winner of the “Clasificatorio Mexicano presented by Mobil” which is scheduled for October 22 at Mayakoba.
